ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS OF THE NHS CLASS OF 1963 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2024
On June 5th 2024, two NHS Class of 1963 scholarships each worth $12,000, one Richard Cabral Memorial Scholarship worth $12,000 and the 1st annual Peter Stylianos Honorary STEM Scholarship also worth $12,0000 were awarded to four highly qualified graduating seniors at the Nashua High School South Scholarship Awards Event. Pictured below are members of the Class of 1963 that assisted with the scholarship presentations, along with the winners of each scholarship. Since 2013, a total of 31 scholarships sponsored by the Class of 1963, have been awarded, worth over $108,000.
THE NHS CLASS OF 1963 SCHOLARSHIPS
The two NHS Class of 1963 Scholarships) shall be awarded to a student with a demonstrated financial need who has been accepted at an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university (not an on-line college). Applicants must have maintained a 2.5 GPA or higher while attending NHS South. Preference will be given to applicants coming from social and/or academically challenged backgrounds, and who have been involved in extracurricular activities and/or provided community service while at NHS South; and who may not easily qualify for other awards.

In reviewing the selection of Mireielly Ferreira for one of the two NHS Class of 1963 Scholarships for 2024, our NHS-1963 Alumni Committee was impressed not only with Mirielly's academic accomplishments while a student at NHS South but we were very impressed with her involvement inside and outside of the classroom, in particular her leadership of the Engineering Club, her volunteer work at the Alvirne Farm, the Humane Society and the Praise Team at church. Mirielly wishes to become a Veterinarian and she has demonstrated that she has prepared herself well to succeed in her chosen career path. She plans to attend the University of New Hampshire and intends to major in Animal Sciences or Pre-Veterinary at UNH.

In reviewing the selection of Conner Mason for the second of two NHS Class of 1963 Scholarships for 2024, our NHS-1963 Alumni Committee was made aware of his academic achievements including a GPA of 3.7, and his preparations to pursue a career in forestry. We were also impressed that Conner successfully dealt with and overcame significant family and personal challenges while achiveing good grades, and did so with remarkable composure and maturity. Conner has been characterized by school staff as hard working and self motivated. He have also found time to be in the band, Engineering Club and to work part-time. We believe Conner to be a most deserving recipient of one of this year’s NHS Class of 1963 scholarships. Congratulations Conner.

ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF THE RICHARD CABRAL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2024
Eleven years ago, the NHS Class of 1963 celebrated the 50th anniversary of its own graduation from the former Nashua High on Elm St. (the predecessor of NHS South) by establishing a permanent Scholarship Endowment Fund dedicated to benefitting students at Nashua High School South. Later on, at our 55th class reunion in 2018, a new, additional scholarship was established to honor the spirit, legacy and extraordinary financial support of our classmate Dick Cabral (1945—2017) and his wife Wendy Cabral.

The Richard Cabral Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an applicant viewed by the faculty at NHS South as an "overachiever" during high school; a student who has overcome obstacles in order achieve his or her special level of academic accomplishment, a student who demonstrates a positive, highly motivated "can do" attitude, and who has achieved success in spite of challenges out of their direct control.

In reviewing the selection of George Lazaro Zamata, our NHS-1963 Alumni Committee was impressed not only with George's academic accomplishments while a student at NHS South (GPA of 3.8) given that he is a native of Peru and had to learn not only the English language but to adjust to a new culture and succeed academically. We were very impressed to learn of George's initiative in creating and leading the Latino Club and the Student Language Assistance Club at NHS South as well as his volunteer role as student mentor and translator for ELL students.

ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF THE PETER STYLIANOS HONORARY SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2024
The Peter Stylianos Honorary STEM Scholarship is new this year, and will be awarded each and every year going forward to a student who has a demonstrated financial need and who has been accepted at an accredited 4-year college or university, and who has maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher. Preference will be given to an applicant who has exhibited a strong interest, academic achievement and who plans to pursue a career in a STEM-related field (Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math).

In reviewing the faculty committee's selection of Dante Castellano for this scholarship, we were very impressed with Dante's scholastic achivements (GPA of 4.5) as well as his extensive participation in extracurricular activities including the Planet Earth Club, Interact, Young Democrats, serving as Student Rep for NHS South on the Nashua Board of Education and the Nashua Environment & Energy Committee, and participating as a student athlete on both the NHS South Soccer and Track teams. He also set up, recruited volunteers and help plant 9 trees at NHS South. His active participation in both school and community activities was truly remarkable. His desire to pursue a career to help manage the environmental crisis is most admirable. Dante plans to attend the University of Massachusetts in Lowell and major in Environmental Science. He wishes to pursue a career that will allow him to make a positive impact to the community.
