RANDY BRACCI
OBITUARY - A special shining light in our lives went out on June 29th with the passing of Randall “Randy” Bracci. He passed peacefully with his family. Randy was the oldest of two children born to Aldo and Ida Bracci. He was born on March, 2, 1944 in Haverhill, MA. From his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins in Haverhill he grew to love and have great pride in his Italian ancestry. The Braccis relocated to Nashua in the early 1950s where they settled on Broad Street.
From an early age Randy was precocious, gregarious, and entertaining. A bundle of energy and born leader to his countless friends. |
As he aged, his athletic ability, determination, and competitiveness became apparent. He was outstanding in football, basketball and baseball. His first Biddy Basketball coach was advised to select Randy to insure a good team. Doing so, Randy proceeded to score 71 points to lead his team. In an era of Nashua High great football excellence, Randy was a star all-around player and valuable teammate. He would go on to excel in sports and coaching throughout his life. From an early age, Randy had a passion for speed, cars, and motorcycles. He especially liked corvettes of which he owned several. Randy was a proud member of the Corvette club, and prize gem was his 1963, Vida Blue Vette that boasted tricked out chrome work and took home several first place awards in car shows around New England.
Randy enjoyed traveling with his first and second wives and friends. He discovered the west coast of Mexico before development of the Mayan Riviera. Interest in motorcycles resulted in annual trips to Bike Week in Loudon, to Daytona Beach for races, and countrywide scenic rides both alone and with groups. He had much of the spirit of Ernest Hemingway as the Florida’s Key West was a favorite place to “Hang out”. Perhaps his favorite spot for that pastime was Provincetown on Cape Cod. His greatest pastime was spending time with his three Children, Jessica, Jared and Gina. He had a love for teaching kids about sports and how to be a team player: and mostly, never to judge, but to be curious. A favorite pastime was to take the family skiing in the White Mountains, particularly, Black Mountain, where he would teach his children how to ski from a very early age. Randy possessed the special skill of patience and calmness with all kids, no matter what their skill level was. Perhaps his greatest ability was instilling confidence in others as they learned at their own pace.
Selective Service soon came calling, so Randy enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as the Crew Chief in the 101 First Air Born Division during the Vietnam War. After Nashua High and during his Army basic training, he married his longtime childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Susan Bellavance. They had three children, Jessica (Mrs. Scott Waters), Jared, who survive him, and Gina, who was predeceased in October 2010. Honorably discharged, Randy joined his father working at New Hampshire Plating in Merrimack. With his keen intellect and strong work effort, Randy quickly mastered the skills necessary for great success. He was blessed with the ability to relate to people from every strata of life. Whether it was a company CEO, custodian, country club member, or guy off the street, everyone knew and loved Randy. In addition to the company’s industrial business, Randy developed a interesting and very active sideline, Himself at the time, a motorcycle enthusiast, he found a way to chrome plate virtually every part of a motorcycle. Needless to say, his Harley Davison sparkled beyond comparison and descriptio Randy moved on to work for his brothers-in-law, Joe and Sam Bellavance, at Bellavance Beverage Company. For many years, Randy supervised the company’s warehouse and daily delivery of product. Randy spoke highly of his experience there, his employers and coworkers.
Before fully retiring, Randy put to use his vast motorcycle knowledge working at RJ’S Motorcycles.
After divorce, in time found love again. He married Judy Higgins, also a motorcycles enthusiast. Judy passed away earlier this year on March, 28, 2024.
There will be a full Military Service honoring Randall, on August 22, 2024 at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH at 11:00 am. In addition, a Mass will be held in his honor at the Saint Teresa’s Parish in Rye NH on Oct 27, 2024 at 10 am.

PAMELA (DENAULT) FARIZ
OBITUARY - Pamela A. Fariz, 75, died peacefully on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. She is the beloved wife of James A. Fariz. They met at the Berkshire in Nashua and danced their way through 52 years of marriage together.
Pam was born in Nashua, NH on October 21, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Gilbert “Gibb” Denault and Agnes (Boska) Denault. She received her education in the Nashua School System and was a graduate of Nashua High School, class of 1963. |
Early in her working career she left a job at Edgecomb Steel to raise her children, working nights at Davidson Travel Service. Being a travel agent gave her the opportunity to visit destinations all over the world, including Japan, Africa, Australia, Germany, Poland, England and many more. Pam then went on to a position in Human Resources at Continental PET Technologies, always going above and beyond to help employees. Her last and favorite position was as a Transcriptionist for the Nashua Police Department, where she worked until her retirement.
Looking her best in matching everything, Pam loved to dance and she and Jim were the couple to watch at family gatherings and parties. She also liked to do crafts, puzzles and play games. Computer games, card games, board games - she crushed us on all - but her game of choice was Bingo. She would give rides to family members and friends who wanted to play but could no longer drive themselves. She also enjoyed visiting the family lake house, bus trips to local casinos with her sisters and friends and attending activities at the Nashua Senior Center. Pam cherished time spent with her family and especially loved her role as Nana.
In addition to her husband, Jim, she is survived by her two children, Lisa Toli and her husband John of Windsor, SC and Michael G. Fariz and his wife Heather G. Lima of Nashua; her two grandchildren, Anna Toli and Jordan Fariz; as well as her three sisters; Valerie Denault of Nashua, Pauline “Chip” Davidson and her husband Donald of Florida, and Wendy and her husband Normand (deceased) Bourbeau of Nashua; along with many nieces and nephews.

ELAINE (DOHERTY) ZIMMER DAVIS
OBITUARY - Elaine Ellen Zimmer Davis, 76, died on Thursday, April 21 in Providence, RI after complications related to a stroke. Elaine is survived by her husband, Ron Davis, sons, Brett Davis (Jessica Davis) and Craig Zimmer (Bea Zimmer), grandchildren, Alie, Matt and Nick Zimmer and Breeze and Jake Davis. Elaine was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Helen Daugherty, and her first husband, Jerry Zimmer.
Elaine was born in Providence, RI, where she spent her early childhood. She relocated with her parents to Nashua, NH and graduated from Nashua High School. She attended Bryant College where she met Jerry Zimmer, her first husband. They married before Jerry went to Vietnam as a Marine jet pilot. Captain Jerry A. Zimmer, USMC (Dec.) was shot down and declared MIA, August 29, 1969. Elaine and Craig (3 years old) moved to California to start a new life. |
Shortly after moving to California, she met her future husband of over 50 years, Ron Davis. Ron, having just returned from Vietnam himself, fell in love with Elaine and Craig and they married a few months later. Ron joined the FBI and the family moved to Albuquerque, NM where Brett was born. Less than a year after getting to NM, the FBI moved the family to San Diego, CA. Elaine managed an orthodontics practice for a few years but found it uninspiring. Her true passion was writing and so she returned to college, at the age of 44, to earn a degree in Journalism from San Diego State University. Upon graduation, Elaine was able to quickly turn her writing into a full-time job. As an avid sailor, she started her career by writing about the sport of sailing. She covered the first ever US America's Cup defeat to Australia in 1983 off Newport, RI as well as the next two Cup competitions. Eventually, she moved on to international travel writing. She was published in major newspapers and over fifty magazines that focused on business, industry, airline, and general interest. During her 30-year plus career she was also Editor for five large-circulation magazines.
Elaine had a deep love of all water-based activities. The Davis family started sailing soon after getting to San Diego and they have been boating ever since. She picked up Windsurfing in the very earliest days of the sport, eventually becoming an instructor on Mission Bay. Elaine and Ron are 35-year members of San Diego Yacht Club, where Elaine was the editor of The Mainsheet, a print membership publication, for many years. Finding Jerry's crash site was a pivotal event in Elaine's life. In the latter half of Elaine's life, she became very involved in the National League of POW/MIA Families. This organization is dedicated to repatriating missing service members, like Jerry Zimmer, who never made it home from a foreign war. She used her deep understanding of the military and her powerful writing to shine a brighter light on the military's critical efforts to bring every missing Marine/Soldier home to their families. In her case, even after multiple excavations of the crash site, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) was unable to find any human remains in the mountain terrain. If you would like to read more about her Vietnam journey, please visit Elaine's blog at www.bringingjerryhome.com.
Most recently Elaine and Ron split their time between their home on Harbour Island in Narragansett, RI and their Pt Loma home in San Diego, CA. Elaine was a wonderful grandmother, mother, wife, daughter, and friend. She impacted lives all over the world, particularly in China where she lived with her husband, Ron in the early 2000s. The kind regards the family is receiving from around the world is inspiring. She was quick to make friends and always seemed to learn something beautiful and unique about their lives in their first conversation. This is the same set of skills that made Elaine such a great writer. Elaine always cared about the subject matter and that it was portrayed in the best possible light.

STEWART HERRICK
OBITUARY - Loved misfits, heavy cream, car washes, his family and anything fried. Never met a vegetable he liked and reserved a special hatred in his heart for hospital food. Fortunately for him, he wasn’t able to eat any of it during his final five-day stay in the ICU leading up to his passing at 12:56 pm on March 13th with his wife, daughter and son by his side, all of whom honored his legacy by making middling jokes ’til the bitter end.
|
He attended Syracuse University and Suffolk University Law School. In between achieving degrees, Stewart avoided being drafted into the Army by instead enlisting in the Navy. Boy, did he fool them. He was soon shipped to Vietnam where he was a Swift Boat Captain navigating the Mekong Delta. During his second tour of duty, Stewart refused to participate any longer on moral grounds. Knowing he was facing a court-martial and jail time for dissent, his men wrote a letter attesting to Stewart’s character and honor that was sent to President Nixon. The letter did the trick as Stewart not only avoided prison, but received an honorable discharge from the Navy. One of countless examples in his life of how Stewart squeezed through a seemingly too-small crack to get to daylight on the other side.
Another such obstacle he spent his life trying to get around, over or through was alcoholism. One could say a lot about Stewart’s battles with alcohol over the years, but one couldn’t say he ever stopped trying. The man had many false starts, wrong turns and detours, but he always got back on the road to recovery. Stewart had proudly been sober for several years at the time of his passing, and, while it took a bit longer, he also quit smoking at 77 years young. Prior to that, he used those well-worn lungs of his to sing hymns in church with a confidence and volume that would’ve made Sinatra blush. Stewart eventually left Catholicism in his 40s and instead practiced his own brand of spirituality, which still included praying to God, but did away with the singing. Hallelujah indeed.
A defense and civil rights attorney by trade, Stewart’s record in trial decisions was sterling. One of his first cases was the watershed Patty Hearst case. In addition to a murderous intellect and indefatigable work ethic, the man knew how to work a crowd, a courtroom and a jury box. (He decidedly did not know how to work an iPad or email particularly well in his later years, but he made up for that with an extremely fancy coffee machine he used ceaselessly and with deft precision.) In addition to opening his own law firm in middle age, Stewart was offered a professorship at Harvard Law School, which he turned down presumably because Harvard does not have a fuzzy orange for a mascot.
Not many people have both a 33-year marriage and a 23-year one, but Stewart did. The man loved love in all its forms and recognized it as the real nourishment this life has to offer. Next to Slim Jims, Hot Tamales, Twizzlers, MSNBC and lawn care, his second wife Susan was the love of his life.
The love he had for his children was similarly oceanic. From lightning storm viewing parties in the garage and July 4th fireworks displays for the neighborhood to dancing on the coffee table, snowtube boat rides in the huge puddle under the apple tree and sitting on his lap to help drive home from Mom’s Ice Cream, Stewart took pride in being a father and encouraged a certain rebelliousness in his kids. His to-hell-with it commitment to fun embarrassed his kids almost as much as it delighted all his kids’ friends.
Stewart is survived by his wife Susan, sister Lori, his first wife Gretchen and their three children Alisa, Craig and Ashlie, eight grandchildren Ella, David, Grace, Jack, Henry, August, Oliver and Sasha, two step kids Rhys and Devon, and a whole host of addicts in recovery whom he loved dearly and believed in with all his heart. If heaven is, in fact, a real place, Stewart is undoubtedly playing with the three dogs he had over the course of his lifetime and preparing for the joys of becoming a scratch golfer—something that eluded him here on earth.
Rest in peace, Stewart Thurston Herrick. Drive fast and take chances up there, but don’t drink and leave the cigarettes alone, too. Just to be safe.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 3rd at 12:00 p.m. at First Church located at 37 High Street, Marlborough, MA, 01752. Stewart’s ashes will be spread off the coast of Rockport, MA.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Addiction Referral Center. Click here. Checks may also be mailed to Addiction Referral Center, P.O. Box 225, Marlborough, MA, 01752.

DOUGLAS MELLIN
OBITUARY - Douglas Richard Mellin, 73, of Powder Hill Drive, Franconia NH and 27 Chestnut St., Exeter NH, died Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from complications of ALS: a curse without a cure. Born May 23, 1945, Doug was the son of Marion and John Mellin of Alds Street, Nashua and a 1963 graduate of Nashua High School where he was a member of the ski team.
In 1968, Doug received an Associates Degree in Civil Engineering from the Franklin Institute, Boston. He was a 1973 graduate of UNH achieving his BS in Community Development and later interned at SENH Regional Planning. Doug became Exeter's first Town Planner, where he worked from 1973-1985. He later served as Operations Manager at Hampton Public Works Department for 18 years, retiring in 2008, setting his sights on designing a post and beam home in his beloved White Mountains, with a view of Cannon Mountain. Doug was a veteran of the Air National Guard, serving from 1968-1974. |
Along the way Doug encountered a familiar gal from The Exeter News-Letter Co., where he regularly dropped off legal notices for publication. The occasion; a 1976 Bicentennial celebration at Phillips Exeter Academy which provided a breathtaking experience beneath a star-studded sky, with Arthur Fiedler conducting and a massive canopy of fireworks mingling with a carpet of twinkling stars. The historic celebration was the perfect setting from which a 43 year romance was launched. Married July 28, 1979 to Gayle (Marcotte), originally of Nashua, the couple built a home on Watson Road in Exeter. Their property quickly expanded to a mini-farm after receiving a lamb as a wedding present. Doug spent many nights in their small barn overseeing births. He loved gardening and maintained several varieties of apple trees and berry patches. In November, 1980, a son, Craig Robert, was joyfully welcomed into wondrous surroundings at 60 Watson Road.
"Not a seeker of fortune and fame, just a fun-loving player in life's unpredictable game", Doug loved the outdoors and nature. He made it a priority to accelerate his quest for adventure following his preliminary ALS diagnosis in May 2017, scheduling a second Europe river cruise, two new camping trips with friends to Nova Scotia and Glacier National Park and revisiting six favorite ski destinations out west and a new one at Revelstoke, BC in the spring of 2018, a trip to Sedona, Ariz., to rendezvous with his son, Craig.
Boating on the great Atlantic with friends fishing, scuba diving and occasionally dropping anchor at Gosport Harbor at the isles of Shoals where spectacular moon rises and sunsets often enhanced their nautical experiences. Scuba diving in the Caribbean among wondrous sea creatures was another recreational delight, on a week-long sail in Belize with Captain Bevin and his mate at the helm, the most spectacular of all.
In winter he sought ski adventures with family and friends and was a ski instructor at Loon Mountain for12 years, and skied Cannon as time allowed. Doug planned dozens of ski trips out west which only encouraged his enthusiasm for travel, eventually launching at least five trips to European Alps and on occasion, a cultural side trip would be integrated (Florence/Alagna and Venice/Dolomites).
In Franconia, he resumed the game of golf, when not fishing, gardening, biking or traveling. He was a member of the Bethlehem Country Club, playing in two leagues. In recent years, Doug cherished the opportunity to join former Nashua High golfers for some informal rounds in southern N.H.
Doug is survived by his wife, Gayle, a step daughter, Stacey Foote and his son Craig. Doug and Craig adopted their motto "Carpe Diem" after staying at a hotel of the same name during a ski trip in Switzerland; an ideal which Doug carried to his last days. Thanks to Santa, a "Carpe Diem" flag flutters proudly on the banks of the Parker River at Craig's home in Newbury.
"Fortunate to have great friends and lifelong love of his son and wife", Doug's inspiring spirit will endure within us

MARTHA (PRIEST) GROOME
OBITUARY - The art world sadly lost the earthly company of a true and insightful local artist as the result of the death of Martha J. Groome, late of Arundel, Maine, on July 17, 2022. Martha was a longtime resident of both Kennebunkport and Arundel and was well known for her unique style of art, her kindness, and for her generosity to numerous local charitable causes. She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Groome in 2007.
Martha graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1967 with a BA degree in painting and graphics. Martha’s art has been shown throughout Maine, in numerous galleries, including in Brunswick, the Icon Contemporary Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and in galleries in Kennebunkport, York, and elsewhere. |
She was more than a local artist though, as her work has had regular showings in Philadelphia in Larry Becker Contemporary Art, and in Dallas in Barry Whistler Gallery, where, today in both galleries, a collection of Martha’s paintings continues to be shown. Martha was an introspective person who constantly wondered what and how things were, and why they were, which wonderings influenced her contemporary art. When asked what any particular work of hers represented, she would respond by saying, “whatever you find it to represent.”
She was fiercely independent and knew her own mind. She demonstrated her independence when due to a lengthy and final illness she had to leave her home and be cared for in a nursing facility for the last six-months of her life. She often would challenge the need for particular treatment in her care in explicit terms. Eventually though, she saw the wisdom in the recommended course of treatment and assented, trying, however, not to show, either the hint of a smile or the appearance of acceptance in her eyes. Martha was known by her neighbors in Arundel and Kennebunkport for her daily jogging in the early morning hours or driving about town to complete her daily errands. She maintained beautiful flower gardens on her property, kept as much as possible in their natural state, and enjoyed the wildlife that would venture on her property from time to time, as well. Martha is survived by her sister Anne Saxe of Carlsbad, California, two nieces, Alison Carmon of San Diego, California, and Carole Lockaby of Phoenix, Arizona.

IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING.......
"I wanted a perfect ending. But now I've learned the hard way..... that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next." Gilda Radner (1946-1989) |
AND FROM THE IRISH........
In life, there are only two things to worry about --- either you are well, or you are sick. If you are well, there is nothing to worry about, but if you are sick, you have two things to worry about --- either you will live, or you will die. If you live, there is nothing to worry about, but if you die, you have two things to worry about --- either you will go to heaven or you will go to hell. If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about, but if you go to hell, you'll be so busy renewing acquaintances with all of your friends from the Nashua High School Class of 1963, you won't have any time left to worry!
